LAHORE:
Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif on Friday formed a committee to devise a plan for arrangement of emergency medical care at universities in the province.

The decision was taken in view of a report submitted by the CM’s Inspection Team on the death of University of Engineering and Technology (UET) student Moeen Manzoor on Friday.

The report stated that the student had died of heart attack. It said there was no arrangement at the university for provision of emergency medical care.

The Punjab Higher Education Commission chairman was made in charge of the committee. Other members would be vice chancellors of public and private universities.

The chief minister also directed the health secretary to give his recommendations on the matter.

Kissan Package:

Separately, Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif said that the Rs100 billion Kissan Package would help promote farmers’ welfare. He said Rs50 billion would be spent in 2016-17 and the remaining amount in the next fiscal year. He said subsidy on fertiliser, electricity and agricultural tools would provide relief to farmers.

He was speaking to MPAs at his chambers at the Punjab Assembly.

The chief minister said farmers with 12-acre and lesser landholdings would be given interest-free loans under the kissan package. He said the government would pay the markup on the loans.

Sharif said Rs5 billion had been allocated for promotion of research on cotton crop. He said production of good quality cotton seed was the need of the time. He said a comprehensive policy was being formed to provide good quality seed to farmers. It should be ensured that benefits of agricultural research reach the farmers, he said.

He said the agriculture sector in the country had been hit hard because of the global economic recession.

The Kissan Package would help reduce the impact of the recession on the farmers. “The agriculture sector is the backbone of the province’s economy,” he said.

He said development of agriculture, livestock and dairy farming sectors would lower unemployment and ensure prosperity. He said use of modern technology could be helpful in this regard.

Report sought

The chief minister sought a report from Okara DPO regarding the murder of a first grade student after his kidnapping.

He said those responsible for the crime should be arrested immediately and put behind bars.
