KARACHI:
A suspect arrested over his alleged involvement in a house robbery died under mysterious circumstances in a District West police lock-up on Tuesday.

The suspect, identified as Faisal Rafiq, was kept detained in a lock-up at Pakistan Bazaar police station where he died under mysterious circumstances.

Rafiq’s family staged a protest, claiming that he was killed due to police torture. His body was taken to Abbasi Shaheed hospital where doctors have reserved his medical report and sent the samples for a chemical examination.

Meanwhile, the police have rejected the allegations made against them by Rafiq’s family.

Narrating the robbery incident, police officials said that two men entered the house of Arbab Ali in Gulshan-e-Zia. Rafiq was caught by the neighbours, while his accomplice was able to escape.

SHO Imtiaz Jutt said that the neighbours severely beat Rafiq before handing him over to the police. He was shifted to a lock-up after medical treatment at a hospital but he succumbed to his injuries, he added.

District West SSP Pir Muhammad Shah has directed Orangi SP Ali Asif to conduct an inquiry over the incident.
