Playwright approached by Javed Akhtar to turn ‘Pyas’ into film
KARACHI:
A work of renowned playwright Asghar Nadeem Syed, TV drama Pyas will soon be turned into a Bollywood film.
This was revealed by Syed during a conversation with The Express Tribune. “I have been approached by Indian lyricist Javed Akhtar for permission to make a film out of my play Pyas,” he said.
Akhtar met Syed during the latter’s recent trip to Mumbai where the Bollywood writer mentioned the Nusrat Thakur directorial that was aired on PTV.
Separately, it seems Syed has his own hands full as he is currently writing a Shahzad Rafiq film that has a “very challenging subject”. The veteran writer is also working on two other drama serials, one of which will be aired from PTV Quetta. “Balochistan has a beautiful past. These people have a secular history where you’d see people from all religions leave in harmony,” he said, adding, “I believe we need to show that side of the region through drama.”
Why blame cinema for violence and rape, asks Javed Akhtar
On the other hand, Syed is also nearly done with his autobiography, which is set to hit stores later this year, and a compilation of his journalistic writings. “One book will have all the articles that I have written over the years, touching on literary issues to trends in literature and will also include the numerous interviews that I have conducted.” He said another book, in the works, will be a compilation of his six long plays. “They touch upon socio-political subjects of our time,” he added.
Syed said his writings general do not focus on family conflicts and he likes to look at the bigger picture. “They’re more about political issues, folklore, tradition and heritage.”
