Counting hours: Delayed result forces students to take to streets

Parents, book sellers also protested outside BISE building

ABBOTTABAD: The parents, students and book shop owners protested on Friday against the administration of Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education Abbottabad for delay in issuance of result copies. They accused the board administration of keeping its tradition intact.

The protesters were agitated for not getting the copies to check the results. They were demonstrating inside the BISE building on Murree Road in Abbottabad.

BISE announced the top positions of Secondary School Certificate annual results 2015/16 on Thursday afternoon during a news conference, where the BISE chairperson announced the complete gazette would be released on Friday to all the schools and shopkeepers desiring to purchase the copies. However, when parents, students and book sellers of neighbouring localities in different parts of Hazara Division reached the BISE building they were told the BISE administration had not yet received the copies.

The angry students, their parents and book sellers chanted slogans against the controller, chairperson and secretary of BISE. They said this was the second time the board has not released copies on time, leaving students anxious about their results.



Last year, said the protesters, the BISE administration did the same and issued the result copies with a delay of two days, and even that to only 50% of the schools. They demanded the chief minister to make an enquiry against the BISE administration, saying BISE Abbottabad must have its own printing facilities instead of relying on others.

When approached for comments, the board chairperson was not available while an official, requesting anonymity, said BISE Abbottabad gets the gazettes published from Lahore. He added the vehicle carrying result copies broke down on the motorway this time and was expected to reach Abbottabad by Friday evening. He said the copies would then be issued to schools and book sellers on Saturday.

Last year, the result copies were issued two days late and the BISE administration had then said the carrier transport met an accident.

Board results

The names of those who topped the exams were however announced on Thursday.

As per the gazette shared with the local media, girls outclassed boys, securing two positions out of the top three. In the category of top 20 students, girls again outshone the boys.

According to the results, 58,253 candidates appeared in the exams for all the disciplines, but 44,585 returned successful and the total pass percentage of BISE this year stood at 76.34. From top 20 positions in all the groups, 43 were clinched by girls and boys could bag only 15.

Syeda Sadia of Pakistan International Public School and College topped the exam securing 1,035 marks, Mushtaq Ahmed, a student of Abbottabad Public School & College stood second with 1,026 marks and Warda Jamil of Hazara Public School and College Haripur bagged the third position with 1,023 marks.

BISE announced a cash award of Rs50,000 for top position holders of each group, Rs40,000 for second position holders and Rs30,000 for those who got third position while each of the students in the category of top 20 would get Rs2,000 each.
