A student of University of Swat has alleged some of his professors demand bribes in exchange for approving and passing their theses.
A student of the varsity, Fazal Wahid Fahim, told The Express Tribune on Thursday that he had completed his master’s degree in business management in 2014, after submitting his thesis to his supervisor, Abdul Mateen. “However, another professor, Dr Faisal, instructed me to do some changes in my thesis, which I did,” Fahim added. “But later, he cancelled my thesis and told me to meet a person called Amjad to settle the matter, by paying him money.”

Amjad is a resident of Charbagh tehsil and acts as a middle-man, collecting money from students, and in return getting their theses approved, Fahim said. “Amjad made a call to Faisal, and after a brief discussion with him over the phone, he demanded Rs20,000 for approving my thesis.”
Fahim also provided the media with a recorded phone conversation in which Faisal advises Amjad to make some changes in the thesis and obtain a handsome amount of money.
Inaction
“I gave recording of the conversation between Faisal and Amjad to the vice chancellor of the varsity upon which the VC gave his support and reassured me that Faisal would not get extension for his tenure,” he said.

However, Fahim was shocked to see no enquiry taking place against Faisal by the VC. Moreover, he said, the professor was also given tenure extension.
“Dr Faisal still comes to the university – it is a matter of dismay for me that my thesis hasn’t been passed yet,” he said, adding that the behaviour of his other instructors had also changed after he raised his voice against the illicit conduct of Faisal.
Fahim hinted he might face revenge by the varsity administration, and feared his thesis would never get approved.
Demanding enquiry
Therefore, demanding legal and official settling of the dispute, the student has urged the government to intervene and form an independent enquiry committee to probe the matter, and ensure justice.

“The committee must compare my thesis with that of other students who were given approvals,” he said, adding if his thesis was not found up to par he would tear down his degree. When contacted, University of Swat Public Relations Officer Aftab Ahmad said, “The university administration was unable to take any step against Dr Faisal, since he is on the Higher Education Commission payroll.”
He also told The Express Tribune that the university administration investigated the matter, and dropped charges against Faisal, due to lack of evidence.
