Ensuring peace: Security beefed up for mosques, Ramazan Bazaars

Bahawalpur RPO says 5,158 personnel performing security duties.

BAHAWALPUR: Regional Police Officer Dr Ehsan Sadiq said on Wednesday that 5,158 security personnel had been deployed to protect mosques and Ramazan Bazaars in Bahawalpur division.

He was addressing a meeting held to review security arrangements for Ramazan. The meeting was informed that security cover was being provided to 1,092 mosques, 107 imambargahs, 30 Ramazan Bazaars and 71 Madni Dastar Khawans in the three districts of Bahawalpur Division.The meeting was informed that 2,847 policemen and 2,338 volunteers were performing security duties.

“The mosques have been divided into three categories according to security threats: 72 mosques are in A category, 127 in B category and 893 are in C category,” the meeting was informed. As many as 581 policemen have been deployed to protect 107 imambargahs.

“In Bahawalpur division, 236 policemen have been deployed to protect 30 Ramazan Bazaars. A total of 155 men perform security duties at 71 Madni Dastar Khawans,” the meeting was told.

The RPO said parking space should be established 500 metres away from mosques and Ramadan Bazaars. He said that steps should be taken to establish pickets at all entry points to the division.

Price control

Bahawalpur DCO Dr Ehtisham Anwar said on Wednesday that price control magistrates had launched a crackdown against hoarders and profiteers. He was talking to reporters during a surprise visit to the Khairpur Tamewali Ramazan Bazaar.

“In the ongoing crackdown, 180 raids have been conducted by price control magistrates so far. They have imposed Rs280,000 fines and lodged 24 FIRs. So far, 24 people have been arrested for profiteering, adulteration and violation of Ehtram-i-Ramazan Ordinance,” he said.

He said that the crackdown against profiteering had helped streamline the market mechanism for stabilising prices. “It has been launched to ensure the provision of edibles at affordable rates in the holy month of Ramazan in Bahawalpur district,” he said.

During the visit, he checked the prices of kitchen items, soft drinks, vegetables, fruits and chicken. He directed Khairpur Tamewali Assistant Commissioner Jam Aftab Hussain to improve arrangements for the Ramazan Bazaar. Earlier, the DCO reviewed the performance of price control magistrates.

The meeting was informed that Rs120,000 fines had been imposed under Price Control Act and three FIRs had been registered. “A total of 180 raids were conducted in connection with enforcement of Ehtram-i-Ramazan Ordinance; seven FIRs were also registered. As many as 24 people were arrested. Fines totalling Rs101,000 were imposed by the price control magistrates,” the meeting was informed.

The meeting was also informed that an anti-adulteration campaign was also in full swing and the price control magistrates had conducted raids; collected 22 samples of edibles and sent them to laboratory for examination; lodged 14 FIRs and imposed a fine totalling Rs58,400 in Bahawalpur district.
