PTI women’s wing: Confusion reigns over presidential slot
There are two options at hand; to restore interim setup or revert to old establishment
PESHAWAR:
To avoid confusion over the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf K-P women’s wing presidential slot, the party’s provincial election commission has asked two groups to send their commendations to Imran Khan.
A PTI member told The Express Tribune that in the previous intraparty elections, Naseem Hayat was elected as the provincial president for the women’s wing.
“However, she became an MPA in the 2013 general elections and Samina Abid took her place.”
He added Abid resigned from the post sometime later and Meher Taj Roghani took the slot.
A split
The party member said PTI Chairperson Imran Khan dissolved the intraparty setup in 2015 and announced elections for a later date to take in fresh members. “Till the next intraparty elections, PTI’s election commission established an interim setup in which Noreen Ibrahim was appointed as the temporary president in September 2015.”
He added the intraparty election was postponed and Imran announced the restoration of the old PTI provincial women’s wing till the next election. However, the date for polls is yet to be finalised.
Now, there is confusion over which setup will be restored by the PTI chief, said the party member.
Old and new
As per the old setup, he said Hayat would be made the president and if the interim setup was restored, Ibrahim would take the seat.
While talking to The Express Tribune, PTI MNA Nafeesa Khattak said Hayat submitted a verbal resignation from the wing’s provincial president slot after the 2013 General Elections. Therefore, she has no right to reclaim the seat, she added.
On the other hand, Ibrahim confirmed the PTI Election Commission called for an explanation on the distribution of positions among women of the party. She said they would accept the decision of the party leadership.
PTI Election Commission K-P Coordinator Zafarullah Khattak confirmed it has called both the groups and heard reservations. He said recommendations were also submitted and the party chief will announce a final decision on Tuesday (today).
