KARACHI:
Despite promises of uninterrupted electricity supply during Sehri and Iftar in the month of Ramazan, residents of Karachi's outskirts were left with no option but to eat their first Sehri of this year in the dark.
Power supply had been disrupted late Monday night due to the tripping of the transmission line in Uthal, a district headquarter of Lasbela district and Windar in Hub tehsil, Balochistan.
Dr Habibullah Shaikh, a resident of Hub tehsil, said that there was no electricity during the entire night in the city. He added that despite the promises by K-Electric to provide uninterrupted power supply to its customers during Sehri and Iftar, they failed to provide electricity even on the first Sehri. According to Shaikh, they have stopped relying on the power utility service provider and have arranged 'alternatives'.
According to a landlord in the town of Windar, Iqbal Mirwani, there was no electricity supply between 1am and 8:30am and then from 1pm onwards. He said that his wife made Sehri without electricity and they also ate in the dark. He added that K-Electric has failed to provide relief to people and help them fast.
Kazi Noorulhaq from Uthal also criticised the power utility. "We are literally dying with no electricity," he said. "Most of the times, K-Electric develops a fault in their transmission line and we have to remain without electricity for hours and, sometimes, days." He said that K-Electric has failed to provide uninterrupted power supply to the people. "People who can afford have now disconnected their electricity connections and are using solar panels, generators and other means to keep their homes illuminated," he added.
Similarly, in Gadani, there has been no electricity for the past three days, according to the president of Shipbreaking Mazdoor Union, Bashir Mehmoodani. "It's very hard to work and fast in such a hot weather with no electricity," he said.
Justifications
K-Electric chief marketing and communications officer Fakhar Ahmed told The Express Tribune that the main transmission line in Windar and Uthal tripped late Monday night.
The tripping resulted in power suspension in Hub, Uthal, Windar and Bela and was restored within two hours, he claimed. Commenting on the complaints of the people for having no power during Sehri, he said that electricity was restored within two hours before Sehri, but there might have been some other localised issues such as a fault in the pole-mounted transformer (PMT). He added that it was a small fault and the water pumping stations were not affected.
