The development work on 9,512-acre Taisar Town should also be accelerated, says governor.

Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad Khan directed the Malir Development Authority (MDA) and Lyari Development Authority (LDA) to initiate low-cost housing projects in order to ensure 'affordable housing facilities' to the public.

He said this while presiding over a review meeting of MDA and LDA at Governor House. Local government secretary Baqaullah Unar and officers from MDA, LDA and Board of Revenue were also present.

Public-private partnership mode may be adopted for these low-cost housing units to ensure their timely completion with highest standards, said Ebad. He added that the Association of Builders and Developers (ABAD) was willing to undertake joint ventures for the establishment of low-cost housing units. Karachi is expanding and spreading more than any estimates or projected figures and it requires affordable housing along with other basic amenities, he said.

The governor said that the lack of low-cost housing was a serious issue in the megacity and it is also responsible for mushroom growth of slums in various parts of Karachi.

He called for the removal of all bottlenecks for early completion of New Housing Scheme, Shah Latif Town, and Taisar Town of MDA. The development work on 9,512-acre Taisar Town should also be accelerated, he directed.

While reviewing the development works at Hawke's Bay scheme 42 of LDA, the governor observed that this project has been pending for a long time and efforts should be made to complete it as soon as possible.
