LAHORE:
Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) leader Chaudhry Sarwar said on Monday the party would take to the streets if the Panama Papers scandal was not probed fairly.
Speaking at PTI’s youth convention, titled Future Leaders’ Network, Sarwar accused the government of delaying the matter regarding finalisation of terms of reference (ToRs) for probing the scandal.
PTI leaders Malik Zaheer Abbas Khokhar, Mian Hammad Azhar and Umar Dar were also present on the occasion.
Panama papers: Govt running out of options: Sarwar
“The government should not be afraid of accountability if its hands are clean,” Sarwar said. He demanded that the government immediately solve the matter related to the ToRs. “If the government keeps delaying the issue, that will be detrimental for the democratic process and for the government.” He said PTI leaders were on the same page in demanding accountability of the corrupt.
Sarwar said the government must realise that the nation stood united against corruption. It wants a [fair] system of accountability, he said. He praised PTI workers for actively participating in protest demonstrations and sit-ins arranged by the party. “Our leaders want to train the future leaders of Pakistan. No party can operate at the grassroots without giving due credit to its workers.” He called workers an asset of the PTI.
Accountability: PM must answer all Panama Papers queries, says Tahirul Qadri
Speaking to the media after the convention, Sarwar said that the nation and all political parties were concerned over the Panama Papers leaks. “Those named in the papers make only one per cent of the corrupt in the country,” he said. He said opposition parties and the government should sit together and finalise the ToRs. It is necessary to find a way out of the current political crisis, he said. “If the situation does not improve, the PTI will discuss the future strategy with other parties after Eid. Taking to the streets is definitely an option,” the PTI leader said. Sarwar said that instead of providing basic facilities to the common man, the provincial government was spending on infrastructure projects. “It is spending Rs200 billion on metro transport projects. On the other hand, the poor are suffering due to lack of medicines at public hospitals,” he said.
