Never Forget Pakistan launches 'tribute' website for Pakistani UN Peacekeepers

Never Forget Pakistan launched a 'tribute' website for Pakistani UN Peacekeepers at the United Nations on Friday.

NFP, a campaign working towards social advancement, through its website, aims to highlight positive contributions of Pakistan towards global peace and stability.

The website is a part of NFP's tribute series following its previous tribute to civilians, the military and police officials who lost their lives fighting terrorism in Pakistan.



On June 1, the Pakistan Mission to the UN hosted Pakistan Peacekeepers Day at UN Headquarters, where NFP in collaboration with the Pakistan Mission launched the website.

The ceremony was attended by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon and Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the UN Maleeha Lodhi. NFP was represented by its lead campaigner Mohammad Jibran Nasir.

Addressing those in attendance, Ban paid tribute to services of Pakistani peacekeepers. "Since its first deployment in Congo in 1960, Pakistan has been one of the most consistent and reliable contributors to United Nations peacekeeping," he said.

Presenting the website at the occasion, Jibran said, "In the post war on terrorism scenario, media across the globe has often remarked that Pakistan is struggling with peace but what it has failed to acknowledge is that for the 56 years Pakistan has been struggling for peace in 23 countries through 42 missions."

Pakistan is the third biggest contributor to UN peacekeeping missions with over 169,000 troops dedicated to date and with more than 7000 currently on active duty, the press release stated.

Among several others, DSP Shahzadi Gulfam who was presented the International Female Police Peacekeeping Award in 2011, was also present at the event to represent the Pakistani women and the role played by them in peacekeeping.

"The website aims to archive the the rich history of Pakistani peacekeepers and features a virtual Wall of Valour saluting the 145 Pakistanis who have sacrificed their lives in peacekeeping missions," the statement read.

The website also presents stats on the current deployment of Pakistani soldiers and police officers, while recording the history of various leadership positions held by Pakistanis as special envoys and special representatives of the UNSG, including force commanders and military advisers.
