Labour Welfare Colony to be inaugurated soon
LAHORE:
Provincial Minister for Labour Raja Ashfaq Sarwar on Friday directed Labour Department officials to prepare a comprehensive directory of all Labour Department, Punjab Employees Social Security Institute (PESSI) and Punjab Workers Welfare Board (PWWD) development projects for ready reference.
Sarwar gave the directive while chairing a meeting convened to review all underway and completed projects of the department.
He said all PWWD secondary schools will be upgraded to the higher secondary level.
Sarwar said a Labour Welfare Colony—completed at a cost of Rs926 million—will be inaugurated next month. Sarwar said all social security hospitals and dispensaries were also being upgraded.
The minister expressed satisfaction with progress on various development projects.
He directed pertinent PESSI officers to present a feasible plan on the construction of multistorey buildings for official use.
Sarwar said commercial land of the institute should be used for labourers’ welfare.
The Labour Headquarters Director Dawood Abdullah informed those present that 28,000 CNICs of brick-kiln workers had been made with NADRA’s assistance.
He said the department would soon inaugurate an online registration system to help safeguard the rights of industrial workers.
Those present were informed that health and safety kits would be distributed among labourers across 18 districts of the province while mobile health and occupational safety vehicles would frequent various industrial and commercial hubs to ensure implementation with OSH measures.
They were told that the Provincial Child Labour Survey would be conducted by the Bureau of Statistics in collaboration with the UNICEF and the ILO. Those present were told that the survey would be completed in 18 months.
They were told that 7,000 children had been enrolled across 200 non-formal education centres under various projects aiming to eradicate bonded labour.
Those present were told that 1,000 men and women were being given vocational training across 40 literacy centres.
Labour Additional Secretary Adnan Arshad, PESSI DG Muhammad Hanif, PWWB Secretary Shahid Zaman Lak and other pertinent officials were present at the meeting.
