Criticism: ‘Violence against women on the rise’
Sarwar said legislation that grants women protective cover has not been implemented
LAHORE:
Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf leader Chaudhry Sarwar said on Tuesday that the country’s largest province had become more unsafe for women than earlier. He was addressing a PTI women’s convention.
“Legislation that grants women protective cover has not been implemented. Hundreds of rape cases are reported every year. Where are the institutions responsible for protecting people?” Sarwar asked. He said that the legislation to protect women had been rendered useless in the absence of an effective implementation mechanism. “Punjab witnesses more violence against women than any other province,” he said. He said the PTI demanded a people-friendly budget. “Anti-poor policies of the government have terrified the people,” Sarwar said.
