MUZAFFARABAD:
Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Accountability Bureau on Tuesday arrested two senior officials on corruption charges.

According to a press release issued by the bureau, late Tuesday evening, Mirpur water supply and sewage schemes Chief Engineer Shujaat Jaleel and Project Director Aurangzeb were arrested on corruption charges in the Rs7 billion project.

The suspects allegedly embezzled millions of rupees and incurred Rs110 million loss to the national exchequer in the shape of a claim by the construction company as the head of project management unit (PMU) Aurangzeb forced the firms to stop work on the Rs12 billion project, without any reason.

Both the officials failed to provide the drawing and layout of the project to the construction company on time.

The project that had to complete in December 2015 is still incomplete. It further stated that due to the corruption and nonprofessional attitude of the officers the cost of the project escalated from Rs3 billion to Rs7 billion.

The suspects were shifted to Safe House Thori, Muzaffarabad for investigation and some more officials are expected to be arrested on corruption charges in the same scandal.
