Final arguments on ‘mayoral pretensions’

Justice Shahid Karim of the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Wednesday sought final arguments on a petition against Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Khwaja Ahmad Hassaan’s alleged mayoral lifestyle.
Justice Karim directed the counsel of petitioner Zubair Khan Niazi, a Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) leader, the Punjab government and Hassaan to appear for final arguments on the consequent hearing to be fixed by the LHC Registrar’s Office. The petition was moved by Munir Ahmed, a citizen. The counsel for Ahmed, Azhar Siddique, said Hassaan had been presiding over official meetings in a mayoral capacity despite just being elected the Union Council (UC)-107 chairman. He said a petition against his election was sub judice. Despite this, the counsel said, Hassaan had been chairing meetings in a mayoral capacity.
Siddique said this violated the Constitution and amounted to a burden on the national exchequer. He said the UC-107 chairman had been enjoying the perks and privileges that came with being a mayor. Siddique said this was illegal. The counsel requested the court to restrain Hassaan from attending such meetings. He also requested the court to ask for a record of all expenses incurred on meetings chaired by Hassaan to be presented.
