The suspects, identified as Fahim alias Mirchi and Nasir alias Khajji, are said to be activists of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM). The accused were arrested in February this year in a 'targeted' raid in Usmanabad area of the city. They were subsequently taken into 90-day preventive detention and at the expiry of it have now been implicated in two cases.
"The cases pertain to the rocket attacks at Sindh Secretariat building in 1991 and a bomb blast at the same place in 1995," said the investigating officer (IO) of the case, inspector Hameed Khan.
Both the cases were registered with Artillery Maidan police and were dormant, Khan said. He added that cases have now been opened again due to the revelations of the suspects made before the joint-interrogation team during the preventive detention. The IO said that earlier, a suspect was also tried in one of these cases but he was exonerated due to insufficient evidences. "The investigation is under way and we will see the facts thoroughly," he asserted.
On IO's request, the ATC administrative judge sent both suspects in police custody on a 14-day physical remand for questioning and sought progress report at the next hearing.
According to a press release issued by the Rangers at the time of their arrest, Fahim operated from MQM Ranchore Line sector's unit 30 and had ties with Indian spy agency, RAW.
He was also allegedly involved in a dozen targeted killings and in land-grabbing cases, while Nasir belonged to the party's Lyari sector and was involved in at least four killings and extortion cases.
