LAHORE: Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) President Sheikh Muhammad Arshad has emphasised the need for avoiding an increase in duties and taxes in the upcoming budget.

Speaking at a pre-budget consultative meeting with a delegation of traders, led by Babar Mahmood, at the LCCI office, he said, “There is a dire need to evolve policies to discourage the illegal trade in goods. The government should encourage honest businessmen and join hands with them in the interest of national economy.”

He said the business community was a power force to make the country an economic leader, hence the federal budget should be formulated while keeping their stakes in mind.

All the departments including the Federal Board of Revenue and the Punjab Revenue Authority should act as facilitators to the business community, Arshad said, adding smuggled goods needed to be stopped at the border instead of conducting raids in the market.

Former LCCI president Muhammad Ali Mian said the chamber was struggling for the cause of business community.

LCCI Vice President Nasir Saeed and executive committee member Mian Zahid Javed also spoke on the occasion.
