PTI fields middle-class woman to contest by-election on PS-106
A 28-year-old, who runs his own real estate business, selected for PS-117.
KARACHI:
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) fielded Nusrat Anwaar, a middle-class, female schoolteacher, to contest the by-election on June 2 in PS-106, Liaquatabad, considered to be the home ground of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM). Meanwhile, 28-year-old Rafaqat Umar, who runs his own real estate business, was selected for PS-117, PIB Colony.
Nusrat Anwaar, known as one of the diehard workers of PTI and former president of Central district council, has the support of her party. Anwaar has been teaching at a private school for the last six years and belongs to the same constituency. Talking to The Express Tribune, she said that she stepped into politics after joining PTI in 2012 and worked hard for the party. She has previously contested local bodies’ election from North Nazimabad. A mother of two young boys, Anwaar has a supporting husband who also belongs to the PTI.
Meanwhile, Umar, who has been awarded ticket for PS-117, holds a Master’s degree in international relations from Karachi University and runs his own real estate business. Umar told The Express Tribune that he joined the party in 2010 and has also contested for the vice-chairman’s seat from his constituency.
Imran Ismail, a senior member of the party, said that both the candidates are hard-working. “No doubt Liaquatabad is MQM’s home ground but our candidates will try their best,” he said. Responding to the question about switching loyalties at the eleventh hour, he said that they have made the right choice this time.
