Consul general sees bilateral trade rising to $5b

In a bid to enhance bilateral relations, Iranian Consul General Mohammad Hussain Bani Asadi has said the annual meeting of the Pak-Iran Joint Economic Commission will be held in Tehran immediately after Ramazan in which tariff issues would be resolved.
Speaking to businessmen at the Faisalabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FCCI) on Monday, Asadi said after Iranian President Hasan Rouhani’s visit to Pakistan, he was optimistic that bilateral trade would increase up to $5 billion.
He pointed out that a trade delegation of the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry had visited Iran and similarly the FCCI should also send its delegation to explore and exploit the available trade opportunities.
“Iran is a big market for textile products and hence exporters belonging to Faisalabad should exploit this,” he said and stressed the need for exchange of trade delegations and holding exhibitions on a reciprocal basis.
The consul general said some Pakistani businessmen were already working in Iran and some of them had also launched joint ventures in collaboration with their Iranian counterparts.
Outlining the hurdles to trade, Asadi said the major impediment was the tariff barriers which could be addressed only at the government level. “Finance Minister Ishaq Dar is expected to attend the economic commission meeting and businessmen should persuade him to take up this issue.”
