'Illegal detention': 17 bonded labourers rescued

Around 17 bonded labourers, including women and children, were rescued from illegal detention on Friday evening during a raid near RD-186 of Nara Canal, situated within the limits of Januji police station, some 20 kilometres away from Sukkur.

A police team raided the land of a local landlord, identified as Chaudhry Asghar, and recovered a man, 12 children and four women, who were being detained illegally. The rescued persons include Mohan Bagri, Mai Samat, Lalli, Raam, Nanki, Beeba, Mai Seeta, Ramesh, Naresh, Dewanti, Haseena, Majnu, Jai Ram, Jai Pal, Satram, Bhagi among others.

The raid was conducted on the orders of the district and sessions judge Sukkur, who acting upon the complaint of Lal Das Bagri, a resident of RD-186 Nara Canal, had ordered the police to raid the land and recover the bonded labourers.

Lal Das had filed an application in the court stating that 17 members of his family including, women and children have been kept in illegal detention by Asghar, informed Januji police head constable Mumtaz Ali Solangi.

The recovered persons were produced before the district and sessions court. The judge ordered the police to release the rescued people, said Solangi.
