BAHALWALPUR:
United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) Director Vibeke Jensen visited Bahawalpur on Thursday.

The Unesco functionary visited the city on the invitation of former National College of Arts (NCA) principal Sajida Haider. Commissioner Saqib Zafar briefed her on the Derawar Fort and the Sadiqgarh Palace on the occasion. The commissioner, DCO Ehtisham Anwar and Jensen looked into matters pertinent to preserving the erstwhile princely state’s heritage. The need to devote great attention to prevent the aforementioned sites from being destroyed was particularly emphasised by them.


Jensen praised the steps taken by the district authorities to preserve the district’s heritage. The steps taken by the authorities include the renovation of Derawar Fort’s antiquated gateways and the installation of a cannon near Farid Gate. Zafar briefed the Unesco official on the district’s heritage in connection with the initiatives. Earlier, members of the former ruling family of Bahawalpur State briefed her during her tour.
