PESHAWAR:
Pakhtunkhwa Ulasi Tehreek (PUT) leaders have said the $46 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor will only prove to be beneficial for Punjab while other provinces will be deprived of its benefits.
They shared these views during a seminar which was held at Peshawar Press Club on Thursday.
PUT organised the seminar to request opinion leaders from Tehreek-e- Suba Hazara (TSH) to urge the government to give priority to the western route of the economic corridor.
PUT Chairperson Dr Said Alam Mehsud said 80% benefits from the CPEC would go to Punjab.
“The government has neglected other provinces and changed the western route to eastern route in order
to provide reimbursement to Punjab.”
He added “Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa is the heart of this project but it has been excluded from this mega project.”
Mehsud asked other parties to join hands to save this project from being politicised.
Farzana Zain, another PUT member, said, “CPEC will change the region’s fortunes and our future is directly linked to the project. However, it would not be wrong to say the government of Punjab is trying to deprive other provinces of these privileges by changing the route of the corridor.”
On the occasion, Sardar Fida, a member of TSH, said his party would support PUT’s endeavours.
In the backdrop
On February 6, PUT members passed a resolution in favour of CPEC, saying they will vehemently oppose any attempts to change the route of the project.
They criticised the government for its failure to address the needs of the provinces regarding CPEC. They also lauded the role of the political parties in K-P that raised a voice against changing the route of CPEC.
PUT representatives added the prime minister’s letter regarding CPEC after all-parties conference in May 2015 was against the interests of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and did not benefit other provinces either.
They urged parliamentarians of other parties to protest against the matter so it receives adequate attention.
