Missing persons case : Comments sought from police, Rangers

Dozens of complaints have been filed in SHC

The Sindh High Court (SHC) issued notices to the federal and provincial governments on Monday to file comments regarding the whereabouts of 12 'missing persons'.

A division bench, comprising Justices Irfan Saadat Khan and Zafar Ahmed Rajput, directed the deputy attorney general and advocate-general (AG) to file comments of the police and Rangers by May 16.

The bench is exclusively hearing as many as 140 petitions seeking whereabouts of missing persons.

A petitioner, Neelofar Ameen, said her son, Muhammad Zeeshan, a junior accountant at the Karachi University, was taken away by the Rangers on April 15 from the varsity's staff residential colony but his whereabouts are still unknown.

Anwar Minhas, a resident of Gulistan-e-Jauhar, said his son, Ahmed Minhas, a student of NED University, went missing on August 18, 2015. The matter was reported to the police but there has been no progress, he said.

Another petitioner, Nasreen Bano, said her brother, Irshad Ali, an employee of the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB), had gone missing on May 2. She said the police were not giving any information on his whereabouts. Naheed Begum said her son, Waheed Hussain, also a KWSB employee, was missing since April 29 this year.

Petitioner Mariam Asif said her husband was missing since April 28 this year. A resident of New Karachi, Asif is an employee of the health department, she said.

Another petitioner, Abdul Satar, said his son, Muhammad Ashraf, had gone missing since April 18 this year.

Begumun Nisar said her son, Irfan Abdul Malik, a estate agenct, was 'taken away' on April 26 this year, but no information about his whereabouts is being disclosed by the police.


Another petitioner, Shabana Zahid, said the whereabouts of her husband, Muhammad Zahid, were not known to them since April 28.

Petitioner Muhammad Asif said his brother, Muhammad Arif, had gone missing on April 28, but police were not sharing any information about him.

Another petitioner, Binte Fatima, said her brother, Syed Mubashir Ali, was taken into custody by law enforcement personnel in plainclothes on April 2 this year.

Tasleema Bibi said her son, Rehman alias Abdullah, went missing in June last year.

Tanveer Hussain said his brother, Wazir Hussain, was taken into custody by a law enforcement agency while he was returning home with his wife after a wedding.

The judges issued notices to the deputy attorney general and AG Sindh to file comments of the relevant authorities by May 23.

Meeting allowed

The same bench directed the Rangers to allow the meeting of two suspects - Rashid Ali and Muhammad Sharif - detained at the Mitha Ram sub-jail. Ali's sister, Parveen Bano, had alleged that the paramilitary force is not allowing a meeting with the detainee.

Similarly, Sharif's wife, Shabana, had also pleaded to the court to direct the Rangers to allow her to meet her husband at the sub-jail.
