PESHAWAR:
The Election Commission of Pakistan has served notices to those violating the code of conduct in the by-polls for PK-8, Peshawar-VIII.

Insiders in the election commission told The Express Tribune the returning officer/chief election commissioner of Peshawar will serve a notice to Adviser to the Prime Minister Amir Muqam for holding a rally in the constituency.

“We will ask him to explain in what capacity he held a rally in PK-8, knowing that it was a violation of the code of conduct for elections,” an ECP official said. “We will ask our head office in Islamabad to take action against Muqam for this.”

An insider also said ECP would inform the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairperson Imran Khan and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl Chairperson Maulana Fazlur Rehman to avoid holding rallies or visiting PK-8 before May 12, the date of the election.

“We have received reports that the leaders of the two political parties are planning to visit the constituency and we are warning them against it, because that would violate the code of conduct.”

Moreover, the relevant officials said ECP has also received complaints of transformers being installed in the constituency by Peshawar Electric Supply Company and about the communication and works department (C&W) for carrying out development work in PK-8. “We will serve notices to the chief executive officer of Pesco and secretary and director of C&W to ask why they were working in the constituency where elections are going to be held.”

He added, “Under the rules you can’t work in a constituency before the elections.”

Arbab Mir Afzal Khan, a candidate of Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid, has withdrawn in favour of a PTI candidate. The returning officer, Inayatullah Khan Wazir, has approved his retirement.
