Telecom services: IT minister stresses need for accessibility

Prime importance must be given to affordability and accessibility when it comes to provision of telecom services in unserved and under-served areas, Minister of State for Information Technology and Telecommunications Anusha Rahman said.


While directing the Universal Service Fund (USF) at its 44th Board of Directors meeting in Islamabad, she said that there was a need to have a study done and present alternative strategies for broadband coverage. The management was directed to propose options for improvement of the process to enable optimal infrastructure sharing on USF deployed project both on coverage and fibre programme.


The meeting took an overview of a two-year plan along with efforts and development of telecom services in un-served and under-served areas. The Board of Directors took into consideration the project for provision of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) for Basic Education Community Schools. Other board members present included Secretary IT Rizwan Bashir, Mobilink CEO Jeffery Alan Hedberg, and USF CEO Faisal Sattar.
