LAHORE:
An additional district and sessions’ judge awarded life imprisonment on two counts to a man for setting ablaze her seven-month pregnant wife six years ago.
ADSJ Shazib Saeed convicted Sharafat Ali of killing his wife Nasreen Bibi and the child. The judge also imposed a fine of Rs200,000 on the convict and said that he would undergo another six months imprisonment on its nonpayment.
Two other accused, Ali’s mother Hameeda Bibi and brother Akram, were given benefit of doubt and acquitted.
The case had been referred to ADSJ Shazib Saeed by the Lahore High Court after the convict filed an appeal against an earlier judgment in the matter by ADSJ Malik Rafique. Rafique had sentenced Ali to death on two counts.
In her statement to the South Cantonment police, Nasreen Bibi had said that she was doused in kerosene oil and set ablaze by her husband. She had said that her husband and her brother-in-law frequently beat her up over minor disagreements.
The FIR registered in the matter stated that Nasreen Bibi was taken to Mayo Hospital where she died.
Her brother Munir had since followed the case against Ali and his two family members.
