Chehlum: Security enhanced for processions

Over 900 police, Rangers and FC personnel will provide security to mourners.

ISLAMABAD:
The capital city administration has enhanced security for the processions to be taken out on Monday to commemorate Chehlum of the martyrs of Karbala. Policemen along with Rangers and Frontier Constabulary (FC), will ensure the security of the mourners, an official of the Islamabad police told The Express Tribune on Sunday.

Shiite clerics have demanded foolproof security for the processions. “The government should announce a public holiday on the occasion and the army should secure sensitive places,” demanded Hamid Ali Shah Moosavi, chief of Tehrik Nifaz-i-Fiqh Jafaria, a Shiite organisation.

Alam, Tazia and Zuljinah processions will start from Sector G-6/2 Imambargah and conclude at the same place, after passing through its prescribed route.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Tahir Alam Khan said that over 900 policemen, along with FC personnel, will be engaged in providing security to the procession.

The officials will comb the route of the procession early in the morning and install metal detectors with walkthrough gates at entry and exit points of the procession. Bomb disposal squads will ensure technical sweeping at the routes and venues, while policemen in civilian clothing will keep watch on suspicious persons. Monitoring cameras will also be installed along the procession’s route.

A total of 161 Rangers and 36 FC men will be deployed ahead of police reserves at the places identified as sensitive.

Police officials have been asked to obtain declarations from the owners of the houses situated along the procession’s route that they will not allow any stranger to stay at their residences.

Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences and Poly Clinic Hospital have also been requested to make arrangements for dealing with any contingency.
