Lying vacant: 33 in running for PK-8 seat

The ECP has announced by-elections for the vacant seat for May 12

Around 33 candidates submitted their nomination papers for Khyber-Assembly seat PK-8, Peshawar-VII at the provincial chapter of the Election Commission of Pakistan on Thursday. It was the last day to file nomination papers.



The seat fell vacant after Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz lawmaker Arbab Akbar Hayat passed away from a cardiac arrest on March 16. The ECP announced by-elections for the vacant seat for May 12 and nomination papers had been submitted by the candidates. On Wednesday, eight more candidates submitted their candidature and the total number of hopefuls for the seat reached 33.

District Election Commissioner Inayatullah Khan Wazir told The Express Tribune the candidates included PML-N’s Arbab Waseem, Pakistan Peoples Party’s Malik Tamash Khan, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl’s Asif Iqbal Dawoodzai, Awami National Party’s Ijaz Ahmed Seemab and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s Malik Jahanzeb Khan and Shahzad Khan. A PTI Peshawar district assembly member also filed his papers. A majority of the candidates are independent.

Wazir added scrutiny of the nomination papers would be held between April 11 and 12 after which the final list would be displayed by April 20 and elections held on May 12.
