As many as 3,352 people have been recruited for the Specialised Protection Unit (SPU) that has been set up to protect foreigners, including Chinese citizens, working on various development projects across the province, IGP Mushtaq Sukhera said on Monday. The unit would consist of 5,000 officials, the IGP told a meeting at Central Police Office. He said on-the-job training of the recruits had started in Sargodha, Multan and Rawalpindi on March 22. Earlier, SPU DIG Agha Muhammad Yousaf briefed the IGP about the unit’s working strategy. He said an advertisement would soon be made for the recruitment of the remaining 1,648 officials. The IGP ordered that the standards of the six-month training must not be lower than those of the Elite Force’s. The meeting decided that the recruits would be deployed across the province.
