HYDERABAD:
The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has downplayed the political significance of the Grand Democratic Alliance's show of strength in Umerkot on Saturday, describing it as a spiritual gathering.

"It was a spiritual gathering of the followers of Pir Pagara [the head of Hurr Jamaat]," said information adviser Maula Bux Chandio while talking to the media in Hyderabad on Sunday.

He said the PPP has no doubt over the faithful following of Pir Pagara Sibghatullah Shah Rashdi. "But it was the [spiritual] belief which drew the crowd. It wasn't a political public meeting," he claimed.

Tens of thousands of supporters of the alliance converged at Marvi Ground in Umerkot on Saturday where the alliance's leaders took on the PPP-led Sindh government, accusing it of corruption and bad governance. The alliance, led by Pakistan Muslim League (PML)-Functional, comprises some influential political figures, including four former Sindh chief ministers and several former federal ministers.

Chandio blamed the alliance's leaders for having supported martial law regimes. "What kind of democratic people are they who are demanding governor rule in Sindh?" he asked.

The adviser gave credit to the PPP for restoring the democratic dispensation and empowering the parliament. He said PPP wanted a continuation of democratic government in Pakistan but its political opponents want to revert to dictatorial rule.
