Convention: Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa lawyers to boycott courts on Monday

Lawyers are going on a strike to protest kidnapping of their colleagues.

PESHAWAR:
Lawyers in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) announced on Saturday that they would boycott courts on Monday, January 24, across the province to press for the safe recovery of their kidnapped colleagues.

The decision was announced by K-P Bar Council’s Vice-Chairman Mohammad Iqbal Hoti at a joint general body meeting of the Peshawar High Court Bar Association (PHCBA) and Peshawar District Bar Association (PDBA).

The lawyers have been protesting against the kidnapping of senior lawyers Zain Khan Khalil and Bashir Khan.

Iqbal Hoti said the provincial government has failed in maintaining peace and the law and order situation. He said that kidnappings for ransom had become a profitable industry, adding that the provincial government had remained silent on the issue which was causing concern.

The PHCBA General Secretary Aminur Rehman expressed concern over the growing kidnappings of lawyers and traders in the city. He said arrangements have been finalised for the provincial lawyers’ convention, which would be held in the Peshawar High Court (PHC).

Regarding security measures for the convention, he said that the Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) and PHC registrar had given full assurance for the convention’s security. He said the convention would begin at 10 am. Hoti added that the convention was called to discuss a four-point agenda including kidnapping for ransom, failure of the government to maintain peace, an end to judicial corruption and the missing persons’ issue.

Lawyers, however, said that officials of security agencies were in constant contact with them and had assured that they would help out in the safe recovery of the kidnapped lawyers.

Senior lawyer Zain Khan Khalil was kidnapped from Peshawar on September 30 last year while Advocate Bashir Khan has been missing for the past two years. Peshawar High Court Chief Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan had also taken a suo motto notice of the issue.

Led by PHCBA President Syed Attique Shah, the lawyers carried out a protest rally from the PHC that ended at the Peshawar Judicial Complex. The enraged lawyers chanted slogans against the police and the provincial government for remaining silent over the kidnappings of lawyers and traders in the city.
