KARACHI: According to a notification issued by the Sindh home department on Saturday, the provincial government has extended the ban on pillion riding in Karachi for one week and has also suspended all permits for carrying firearms till January 25.

The notification authorised SHOs to lodge FIRs against people violating the restriction on carrying weapons. Department officials explained that the curb has been extended until January 29 to ensure security on the Chehlum of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), to be observed on January 25. Earlier, on January 16, the government had banned pillion riding for one week.

“We wanted the Chehlum to pass peacefully and all stakeholders agreed on issuing the notification,” said Sharfuddin Memon, adviser to the Sindh home minister. He said that the home department does not wish to hassle residents but whether the ban is lifted or not would be determined by the law and order situation.
