Warning the police: Union threatens to disconnect electricity
Union puts pressure on police to find kidnapped daughter of Sepco employee.
SUKKUR:
The Pakistan Wapda Hydro Electric Labour Union Sukkur zone has threatened to disconnect the electricity supply to police offices and residences if the kidnapped daughter of a Sukkur Electric Power Company (Sepco) employee is not found by Monday.
The Sepco employees, led by Zahid Shah, joined the kidnapped girl’s family at Minara Road on Saturday, where they shouted slogans against the police. “Even after four days, the police have failed to recover Rida,” complained a protester, Anwar Mangi. Rida, 16, was kidnapped from her house at gunpoint by six men in Rizwani Muhalla, Rohri on Tuesday morning.
Protesters burnt tyres and blocked the road for nearly an hour, suspending traffic between Sukkur and Rohri. Protest leaders told journalists that after the kidnapping, her father Nasir Jameel lodged an FIR against Jehanzaib Shahani and his father, Afroze Shahani, as well as two other men, but they suspected that the police were not taking action because Afroze was a head constable at Jhangro police station.
Jameel said his daughter is a first-year student at Government Girls Degree College, Sukkur. “She received a proposal from Jehanzaib six months ago and our refusal was met by anger and threats,” revealed Jameel. Jehanzaib often texted me, threatening to kidnap Rida, he added.
“After the kidnapping, I immediately went to lodge a complaint with SHO Tahir Mughal who assured me that my daughter would be found,” said Jameel. The Rohri police have arrested the accused’s uncle but protesters claim that he is being treated like a guest at the police station. Talking to The Express Tribune, SHO Tahir Mughal denied making any arrests and said that despite raiding many areas in Sukkur, Rohri, Khairpur and Larkana, they have yet to find the suspects. “The accused’s father (the head constable) is also missing, but I guarantee that Rida will be found soon,” he assured.
