Transport fares: Authorities give in to transporters’ pressure

The transporters have threatened to increase fares if the government increased the oil prices

RAWALPINDI:

Rawalpindi district administration has accepted the transporters’ demand and withdrawn orders to reduce fares. The administration had directed the public transporters to cut intra-city fare by Rs4 after major cut in oil prices on March 1. However, the transporters refused to cut fares and demanded that the administration withdraw the notification. The administration succumbed to the pressure and withdrew the notification. Campaign against overcharging has also been halted.

Transporters association leaders Raja Riaz, Tariq Khan and Mustafa Awan said transporters had maintained the fares when oil prices were being increased. They demanded that the government also regulate rates of vehicles spare parts, tyres and fees of mechanics.
