MULTAN: A prisoner killed another inmate in the Central Jail, Multan on Thursday.

According to police officials, Borewala resident 25-year-old Nawab was working in the Central Jail hospital washing crockery when Manzoor smashed his head with a brick.

Nawab was given medical aid in the prison hospital but did not survive.

According to the police, Manzoor had been sentenced to 25 years in jail by a Lahore Court.

In 2009, he was shifted to the Central Jail and was considered a security risk and was kept in solitary confinement for several months.

According to a prison official, Manzoor was often used by the prison authorities to threaten other prisoners. A police official said that Manzoor had a quarrel with Nawab a few days ago and that the two men were long-standing rivals.

“When Manzoor attacked him there were several officials present at the scene,” the official said.

“Some policemen have been trying to have him declared mentally unstable to reduce his sentence,” the police official said. Nawab’s body has been taken to Nishtar Hospital and an autopsy has been ordered.

Nawab’s nephew Nabi Noor, who is in jail on murder charges, said that Manzoor had threatened his uncle several times.

The central jail administration has refused to comment on the issue.
