LAHORE:

Justice Ali Akbar Qureshi of Lahore High Court has summoned the transport secretary and the inspector general of Punjab Police on a contempt of court petition.

Earlier, the judge had issued notices to them on the petition on March 1. On Thursday, a law officer had sought more time for filing the reply. The judge directed the secretary and the IGP to appear on March 29 with their replies. The petitioner’s counsel said in 2013, the LHC had directed the government to ensure that vehicles were in good condition before they were allowed to come on the roads. He said the traffic police had been directed to improve the system for issuance of driving licences. He said three years had passed since the order was issued but it had not been implemented.

He said many vehicles did not have mandatory fitness certificates. He said that the traffic police and Transport Department were ignoring violations of the law.
