Govt considering setting up a centralised skills agency
Punjab Vocational Training Council (PVTC) institutes would improve with the establishment of the Punjab Skills Agency

The provincial government is considering a proposal to establish a skills agency to streamline and improve the quality of technical and vocational training programmes administered by various government bodies, Minister for Labour and Human Resources Raja Ashfaq Sarwar said on Tuesday.
He was speaking at a meeting of the Punjab Skill Development Steering Committee at the Planning and Development Department auditorium.
He said he hoped the quality of training courses offered at the Technical Education and Vocational Training Authority (TEVTA) and the Punjab Vocational Training Council (PVTC) institutes would improve with the establishment of the Punjab Skills Agency.
He said the government would soon undertake a functional review of the Punjab Board of Technical Education (PBTE) and the Trade Testing Board (TTB). The two agencies were responsible for accreditation and assessment of training institutes.
Briefing the gathering, PIU Project Director Ameer Khatak said that every year till 2018 548,000 youngsters would be trained in different skills to achieve the two million target set under the Punjab Growth Strategy 2018. Of these, he said, 140,000 would be trained at TEVTA institutes, 133,000 at PVTC institutes, 60,000 by the Punjab Skills Development Fund, 81,000 at training institutes managed by various government departments and 41,000 institutes affiliated with the TEVTA. Additionally, he said private sector institutes would be supported for training of 93,000 youngsters.
Sarwar said funding of these institutions would be tied to their performance.
