PESHAWAR:
After Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf member and now former minister for revenue Ali Amin Gandapur resigned from his ministry, the party seems to be under internal pressure as it prepares for polls.

Gandapur has criticised Chief Minister Pervez Khattak of spending majority of his funds in his home district of Nowshera. Other party members also seem at odds with the chief executive of the province.

Gandapur quits

Addressing the PTI workers convention held at Circuit House in DI Khan on Saturday, Gandapur said PTI won local government elections in only nine districts in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa due to the CM’s poor policies.

“The CM thinks bringing change in K-P is impossible. [So I ask,] if the party’s senior elected members think in such a manner, how is the party supposed to bring change in the province?” Gandapur said. He added he decided to resign so he could take responsibility of the party, so it is not neglected.

Talking to The Express Tribune on Sunday, Gandapur confirmed he resigned from his post. “I have decided to contest for the post of provincial president in the upcoming intra-party elections.”

To a question, Gandapur said he has no clashes with the CM. “I want to serve the people and that’s why I decided to resign and contest intra-party elections,” Gandapur told The Express Tribune over the telephone.

However, a PTI official, requesting anonymity, told The Express Tribune the CM was unhappy with Gandapur. The official said that was why Gandapur resigned from his post.

Ripple effect

PTI MNA from Tank Dawar Khan Kundi and MPA from DI Khan Gandapur have voiced their conflicts with party higher-ups.

A PTI member familiar with internal politics told The Express Tribune after “Dawar’s poor performance”, the leadership struggled to convince Pakistan Peoples Party’s Faisal Kareem Kundi to join the party from NA-25 (DI Khan-Tank). “PTI’s central leadership offered Kundi to join PTI and gave him a ticket for the next general elections. However, he has yet to respond,” the party official said.

Meanwhile, according to the PTI Election Commission K-P chapter, the verification of members for intra-party election is at its final stage. The election commission has also taken action against several who violated the code of conduct set for election.
