Apprehensions: Women protection bill challenged in SC
The petitioner requested the court to declare the law ultra-vires of the Constitution

The Watan Party filed a petition before the Supreme Court (SC) on Friday challenging the Punjab Protection of Women against Violence Act, 2016, for being repugnant to the Constitution. Basim Khan, party’s Punjab chapter president, had filed the petition through Barrister Zafarullah Khan submitting that the impugned law opened the way for breach of privacy. He said its enforcement could ruin marriages. The law could be misused, he said. The petitioner requested the court to declare the law ultra-vires of the Constitution. All actions under the law should be suspended forthwith, he said.
