Breakdown leaves parts of Karachi without power
KE says extra high tension transmission line tripped
KARACHI:
A power breakdown early Friday morning left half of Karachi without electricity after light showers were reported in different parts of the metropolis.
The fault which occurred at 7:00am, was caused by tripping in an extra high tension transmission line, K-Electric (KE) confirmed.
Tripping of transmission lines, power plants plunge parts of Sindh, Balochistan into darkness
"It may take a few hours to restore power in affected areas," a spokesperson for KE told The Express Tribune.
According to KE sources, repair work has begun to normalise all affected grid stations. "Over 50 per cent of the grid stations were affected by tripping in EHT line," the spokesperson added.
"Restoration work is underway and most areas have already been energised," the company tweeted.
Clifton, North Nazimabad, Gulistan-e-Johar, Federal B Area, North Karachi, Garden, Korangi & Defence were among the affected areas.
Residents took to Twitter to inquire about the breakdown as the estimated time for the power to be restored remained unknown.
Karachi braces for likely rainfall
As unexpected rainfall approaches the city, preparations have begun to meet the possible aftermath. Chances of rainfall on Friday morning were confirmed by the focal person of Karachi’s meteorological office, Abdul Rashid. He said that dusty winds might also blow with normal rains. However, he ruled out the possibility of heavy rainfall, like the kind that happened in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). “The system from UAE will affect more of Balochistan’s areas,” he said.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, Karachi will experience intermittent light rain throughout the day on Friday. The metropolis is expected to experience partly cloudy weather with wind speed of up to 25 knots. The rainy weather is expected to last till Saturday.
