KARACHI:

Sindh Wildlife Department (SWD) minister Giyan Chand has appointed Ghulam Mohammad Gaddani as the provincial conservator of the department in absence of Saeed Akhtar Baloch, who is in the custody of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) since last week.

Gaddani, who is currently posted in Hyderabad, confirmed that the high-ups have asked him to take the additional charge. He said it was a challenging task to lead the department in difficult times.

Gaddani is the most senior person in the department after Baloch. The position, on the other hand, is of a grade-19 officer while Gaddani is a grade-18 officer.

The second most senior official in the SWD is Taj Mohammad Shaikh, who is the deputy conservator Sukkur region at present, but, according to officials, was not willing to take charge.

"It is an additional responsibility and I hope Baloch will be released soon and takes charge," Shaikh told The Express Tribune.

Baloch, along with former chief conservator Sindh Forest Department Riaz Ahmed Wagan, were arrested by NAB on March 1 for their alleged involvement in corrupt activities. It is the first time that a top official of the SWD has been arrested on corruption charges, said an official requesting anonymity.
