LAHORE: Lahore High Court on Wednesday issued a notice to Khawaja Ahmad Hassaan on an application seeking a stay order against his taking oath as mayor of Lahore till a final decision on the petition challenging his candidature had been made.

The court asked him to a file reply by March 31. Sheraz Zaka, counsel for petitioner, said he had moved court against the candidature of Hassaan and the matter was pending before the LHC for adjudication.  He said there were reports that Hassaan would be administered oath as mayor in a few days.

He said he should not be allowed to take the oath until the court had ruled on the matter. Under Section 27 of Local Government Act 2013, a person who has held an office of a body controlled by the provincial government is not eligible to contest local government elections.

The respondent had resigned from these offices shortly before filing his nomination papers for LG polls.
