LAHORE:
Many would call them the antithesis of the red carpet but pyjamas have cyclically come back into fashion. And by pyjamas, we mean the comfy sweats and slacks we sleep in.

Yes, you read that right! In what seems to be an extension of the ‘athleisure’ trend, pyjamas have been spotted on the ramps, front rows and street style blogs of the recent New York, London and Milan fashion weeks. The loungey numbers were all over the runways this season, with silks, colourful patterns and Japanese motifs. International fashion giants like Gucci, Alexander Wang and Givenchy have all put a modern spin on night-time classics. In fact, just this week, Dolce and Gabbana (D&G) celebrated its new, sleepwear-inspired collection with a Pyjama Party.

Here in Pakistan, local entreprenuers and designers seem to be joining the party too. Riding on the waves of this trend, Rabbiya Abdullah — of Blood Orange by R fame — has launched what she claims to be the country’s first luxury sleepwear label. Abdullah is stocking silk pyjama sets in a variety of colours and patterns at the House of Aphrodite store in Lahore. Her range includes pyjamas in plain blacks and blues with white piping to polka dots, stripes, checks and other girly prints, selling at Rs2,600 each.

Hits and misses from the red carpet

If you’re thinking one would probably have to be a statuesque beauty at the New York Fashion Week be taken seriously in their pyjamas, high-five! You are hardly the only one to feel so. But as we found out, there is a way to style the trend. For instance, instead of wearing pyjamas head to toe, you can split the pair. Wear the pyjama shirt with jeans or classic trousers. You can also compliment pyjama bottoms with an elegant shirt and heels. So as long as everything you put on is ironed well, you need not worry. Make sure to lift up your outfit with plenty of accessories though, lest you look too casual.
