KARACHI:
A new twist in the recent murder case, in which a man allegedly stabbed his mother to death over a domestic dispute, surfaced on Saturday after the suspect went back on his earlier statement in court.
Ghulam Rabbani, a joint director at the State Bank of Pakistan, denied the charges, even though he had confessed at a previous hearing, and asserted that he was not even present at the house when the incident happened.
Rabbani said that his mother, Naseema Akhter, was killed by robbers who barged into his flat in Boat Basin on February 19. The 58-year-old woman was lying in a pool of blood when he returned from his office late in the evening, while his sister, who had fainted, was lying on the ground in an unconscious state, he added.
This statement came during the third hearing as the police presented him before a judicial magistrate of the South district, Shees Khoso, on the expiry of his second remand.
Though the prosecution maintained that Rabbani killed Akhter, the statement of Tanveer Fatima, the daughter of the deceased, has yet to be recorded since she is still in trauma. She is said to be the only eyewitness. The investigating officer (IO) told the judge that Fatima was recovering but was not well enough to be able to recall the incident.
The judge allowed the IO two more days to complete the investigations and sought a complete report on the next hearing of the case on Monday.
It has been a week since the suspect is in police custody for interrogation. The investigators maintain that the knife used in the commission of the offence has been sent for forensic examination, the report of which is awaited.
