SC orders operation against encroachments in Karachi's parks

The Supreme Court ordered the operation after a petition was filed by former Karachi Nazim Niamatullah Khan.

ISLAMABAD:
Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry on Tuesday ordered the city government of Karachi to start an operation against the illegal occupation of parks.

The Supreme Court ordered the operation after a petition was filed by former Karachi Nazim Niamatullah Khan.

The lawyer of the city government told the court that 90 per cent of the information provided to the court in the petition was wrong. He said that while there were encroachments in some parks, a letter to the Sindh government for their relocation to alternate places had already been written.

The hearing was adjourned till February 2 with the chief justice again asking the government to start the operation and directing it to submit a positive report in the next hearing.

An ordinance for removing encroachments from public property, the Sindh Public Property Removal of Encroachment (Amendment) Ordinance 2010, was also presented in the Sindh Assembly last week.
