Refresher courses: PMDC clears backlog of 7,000 registration cases
The cases were pending due to continue medical education system
ISLAMABAD:
The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) has cleared a backlog of 7,000 registration cases of doctors and dentists pending since the last one year.
“The 7,000 renewal cases were pending with PMDC due to continue medical education (CME) system, under which doctors were required to attend certain classes and trainings as refresher courses held by PMDC certified trainers to earn credit hours for registration and renewal of their licenses,” an official at PMDC told The Express Tribune.
Continue medical education (CME) and continue dentist education (CDE) certificates were introduced for renewal of licenses to continue medical practice. It further served the purpose to maintain skills and keeping doctors and dentists up-to-date, continuing professional development (CPD) to support safe clinical practice.
Medical practitioners have been contesting the procedure ever since it was promulgated, describing it as haphazard, faulty and inadequate. Registration and renewal of doctors and dentists started to pile up in PMDC office on the backlash of non implementation of CME credit hours requirements by doctors.
However, the previous interim management committee of the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) had temporarily suspended the precondition of completing continuous medical education (CME) hours in September 2015.
Doctors are of the view that CME/CDE was a malicious design of PMDC and few universities to mint money from medical professionals.
However, after being elected as PMDC’s president, Prof Dr Shabir Lehri directed the staff to clear all the pending cases within two weeks time.
“Due to these pending registration cases the doctors were facing a lot of difficulties and this act would help to allay the undue anxiety in the medical and dental community in the country,” the president said and added that council was also working on the agenda to introduce new mechanism to remove hurdles or any procedural delays in functioning of the organisation and handling of different type of cases.
He said PMDC was working to introduce online registration system for doctors at par with international standards. The fees and documents required for registration shall be sent online from any city of Pakistan in near future and working hard to set our standards at par with international standards. “After clearance of backlog of pending cases now cases for renewal and registration will be completed in three weeks procedural period,” an official at PMDC told The Express Tribune. She added that new an amicable and a realistic procedure for registration doctors would likely to be discussed in next meeting of the council.
