We all know London's Tower Bridge, San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge, and Sydney's Harbour Bridge but there are a few hidden treasures which we may not have seen, and some which we may have never even heard of.

Detailed engineering and design goes into the making of bridges, to the point that a bridge can be put almost anywhere. There are bridges that traverse mountains, bridges that span across oceans and bridges that even connect two countries.

We look at 11 stunning bridges from around the world which are sure to give you a case of serious wanderlust.

1. Banpo Bridge, South Korea

Also known as the fountain bridge, this bridge was completed in 1982. However, it was in 2009 that the fountains were installed. The water is pumped directly from the river and is recycled continuously.

2. Rialto Bridge, Venice

Venice's famous Rialto Bridge was built to allow for large boat traffic on the city's Grand Canal during its marine trading heyday. Today the bridge is one of the most visited landmarks in Venice.

 3. Stari Most, Bosnia and Herzegovina

Considered as one of the most exemplary pieces of Islamic architecture, it is one of the country's most recognisable landmarks.

4. Puente Nuevo, Spain

This bridge divides the city of Ronda in southern Spain. Its construction commenced in 1751 and it took 42 years to complete. During its construction, 50 workers were also killed. Currently, the bridge contains an exhibition describing the bridge's history and construction.

5. Ponte dei Sospiri (Bridge of Sighs), Venice

This 16th century bridge was built and designed by Antonio Contino. It is made up of white limestone and has windows with stone bars.

6. Khaju Bridge, Iran

This bridge usually works as a dam and regulates the flow of the Zayandeh River. Built in the 17th century at the request of a Persian King, this beautiful bridge has 23 stone arches and links both sides of the Zayandeh River.

7. Chengyang Bridge, China

The beauty of this bridge is that it was built without a single nail. A UNESCO World Heritage site is a place for locals to meet, relax and socialise. It is also known as the Wind and Rain Bridge.

8. Rakotz Bridge, Germany

Also known as the 'Devil's Bridge', this bridge is located in the Kronlauer Park in Germany. It has been termed as the Devil's Bridge as it creates an optical illusion in the water making it unusual and dangerous in its appearance.

9. Gaztelugatxe Bridge, Spain

This man-made bridge has around 237 steps that leads to a hermitage. Gaztelugatxe is a small island which is connected to the coast by a narrow path.

10. The Natural Bridge, Virginia

This geological formation formed a natural arch 215 feet high with a span of 90 feet. The bridge is made up of horizontal limestone strata.

11. Ponte Vecchio, Italy

This famous bridge in Florence is known for having shops built alongside it. Jewelers, art dealers and souvenir sellers currently have their shops alongside the bridge.
