BAHAWALPUR:
The Bahawalpur regional police officer has issued directions to all SHOs in the three Bahawalpur division districts to crack down on drug rackets and gambling dens in their areas within 15 days and submit clearance certificates in this regard. “Bahawalpur police should be as respectable as the Motorway and National Highway Police,” he said.

He was meeting with the policemen, including Regional Investigation Bureau SSP Gohar Mustaq Bhutta, Rahim Yar Khan DPO Zeeshan Asghar, Investigations SHO Irfan Ali Samoo, Khanpur Assistant Commissioner Abdul Ghaffar and DSP Jamshed Ali Shah, during an open court at the Khanpur Canal Rest House on Monday.

RPO Ehsan Sadiq said he would write a letter to the Punjab IG requesting the establishment of a second police station and judicial lock up in Khanpur.

The RPO said that holding open courts would help the police identify and address real issues. “Rarely is any problem solved by paper pushing at police stations,” he said.

The police are accountable to the people, Sadiq said. “Gone are the days when cops would lord over citizens…the old order is over and we are trying our best to change the pattern of policing across the province.”

The RPO encouraged police officers to hold regular open courts. “Bear in mind that this should not look like a political gathering…there will be no room for sycophancy.”

He said the Bahawalpur Range police were a cash-strapped force. “The way they have been observing their responsibilities dutifully is admirable.”

Sadiq also warned the police officers against tolerating corrupt officials in their ranks. The police force has, in the past, been riddled with cops known to be corrupt and dishonest, he said. “They support the land mafia and give drug pushers a wide berth.” The RPO told the officers to weed out such policemen in their areas. “They will be transferred”, he said.

The RPO said “Any SHO who refuses to register a case should consider himself fired.” He issued the SHOs orders to conduct operations in their respective areas and end drug rackets and gambling dens in 15 days. He told them to submit a clearance certificate at the end of the 15 days. “If there is news of drug pushing and gambling after the 15 days are over, the officer in charge of the area should be prepared to face the music.”

Sadiq also discussed rising frequency of suicide attempts by ingesting black stone. He told the DCOs of Rahim Yar Khan, Bahawalpur and Bahawalnagar, to ban sale of the product. The RPO appreciated Assistant Commissioner Chaudhry Abdul Ghaffar’s services in Khanpur.
