KARACHI:
Four officials of the Sindh Police’s special unit which deals with car lifting cases were grilled on Sunday after they were accused of conducting an illegal raid.
Pakistan Bazaar police arrested four officials of the Anti-Car Lifting Cell (ACLC), identified as ASI Panjal, head constables Ali Madad, Ghulam Hussain and constable Nadeem, after they attempted to conduct a raid at a house in Orangi Town early Sunday morning.
The arrested officers claimed they received information about a vehicle lifter through a tip-off, upon which they raided the house. However, locals started protesting to protect the suspect.
Panic gripped the area after the ACLC personnel in plainclothes raided the house, said Pakistan Bazaar SHO Sarfaraz Alyana. “Upon seeing the unidentified persons, the occupants of the house offered resistance and a clash occurred between the two parties.”
The officer said the occupants claimed the plainclothes personnel started looting valuables from the residents at gunpoint. They then resisted the robbery attempt.
Other residents also gathered at the spot and began thrashing the ACLC personnel before handing them over to the police. The crowd also pelted police vehicles with stones, prompting law enforcers to fire into the air to disperse the mob.
Sindh IG Ghulam Hyder Jamali took notice of the illegal raid and suspended the four policemen.
