This is why you should never wash your jeans

Instead of washing your jeans, spot clean them with a toothbrush

An ordinary household chore like doing the laundry might just have been made easier after Levi’s CEO and President Chip Bergh announced that you should never wash jeans.

Although the thought of walking around in dirty jeans may spark feelings of disgust among many, Bergh explained that stains on jeans can be "spot cleaned" with an old toothbrush.

Denim: A twist on the staple

"A good pair of denim doesn’t really need to be washed in the washing machine except for very infrequently or rarely," he said in a video while speaking to the Fortune.

His argument is based around the fact that washing a good pair of Levi's jeans is actually damaging for the material and is also a waste of water.

Other denim experts, including Hiut Denim, have said, "Raw denim is best given a good six months before washing. The longer you can leave it, the better your jeans will look."

The reason behind this is that the indigo of the jeans will have worn off in places where you make natural creases. By sitting down, putting your hands in your pockets, and taking your phone in and out of your pocket will make your jeans look good.

However, if we wash our jeans ahead of time, the indigo will wash off uniformly so it will give it an even, dark indigo cover which means the magic will have gone.

This or that?: Ripped jeans with a dash of tan

Still not convinced? Advice from several jeans manufacturers is to instead put your pair in the freezer overnight to help get rid of the bacteria. Alternatively, they can be left out in the sun, or cleansed with a neutraliser spray.
